What is a "Realschule"?
The
„Realschule“ is one of the three different types of schools
which together form the traditional educational system of secondary schools in
Germany.
Usually, children in Germany start school at the age of six. Then
they attend a primary school for four years. After these four years they move to
one of the three different secondary schools. They are:
·
The “Gymnasium”;
a nine year grammar school preparing the kids for university or more demanding
jobs;
·
The “Realschule”;
a six year secondary school for pupils who are not able to attend a
“Gymnasium” but are more capable than the pupils that go to a “Hauptschule”;
·
The “Hauptschule”;
a five or six year secondary modern school preparing its pupils for vocational training
in more practical jobs.
This
educational system is probably hard to understand when you come from a country
with only one secondary school for every boy and girl, but it has its historical
roots. It may also be responsible for the fact that private schools play only a
minor role in Germany as the normal “Gymnasium” is sophisticated enough for
talented pupils and sufficiently qualifies them.
The
basic idea behind this complex system is to gain more or less homogeneous
classes – put together of pupils of similar intellect and capabilities for
which teachers can find well suited topics and well adapted methods of teaching.
In reality, however, groups of pupils are never homogeneous and, additionally,
parents may think very different about the capabilities of their children than
teachers do.
And,
as in Lower Saxony the parents can decide which school their children are to
attend, you can actually find all sorts of pupils in a typical “Realschule”
– class.
This
makes teaching sometimes rather difficult because the curriculum and the tests
that have to be passed, simply deny those facts.
Whatever
the future may bring: we – the staff of “Wilhelm-Raabe - Realschule Hameln” – believe that we are doing a good job at a good school and this
homepage is supposed to give you an impression of it.
