Learnfield Nature-Culture-Society

The internet module TRIANET "Informationsystem for Environment and Landscape Ecology in the Mediterranean" is structured on the base of "Learnfield Nature-Culture-Society" (LF NCS).

The internet module has been created for educational purposes. Beside basic information about methods of working it contains basic knowledge about the essential subjects of landscape ecology like climate, relief, soil, water and biosystem. Furthermore the module gives information about the Mediterranean area in general and specific information/data about the three model regions. Data of the model regions are stored on three different levels of contemplation.

The first level shows the different areas of development of the model regions, typically for most of the Mediterranean regions:

Coast: with specific problems of increasing tourism, high sensitive ecosytems and high pressure of destruction of the dune-landscape and the lagoons.

Plains: mostly farmland located near the coast line, with modern agricultural development on the base of the intensive farming, application of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, modern irrigation systems and a high water consumtion.

Mountains: traditional centres of culture, new experiences of democracy (e.g. direct democracy of the village of Aperathou/Naxos), economical problems of the villages, destruction of the terraces, overgrazing, soil erosion and a high value of the mountaineous ecosytems (FFH-areas, National Parcs etc.).

On the first level of contemplation on the concept of LF NCS user get information about these typical areas of each model region. The second level contains detailed information about the natural and agricultural ecosytems as a base for understanding the main problems of nature developement and possibilities for sustainability. The third level contains information about steps to sustainable development, guide lines and measures of nature/landscape convervation. These three levels of contemplation offer a complete information base for the comprehension of the complex natural, cultural and social reality by an holistic view of the regions.

There are 12 principles of Learnfield Nature-Culture-Society:

  • Interdisciplinarity: landscape ecology - politics - culture - society,

  • Space-related and regional aspects, ecosystem dimension: model regions in large-scale dimension, local conservation management and planning

  • Connection between nature science and nature conservation in practice

  • Projects: field studies, collection and analysis of environmental data,

  • On the base of the complex cultural and social reality,

  • Comprehension of the live reality of life: development of individual and collective capability of acting

  • Instrumental funktion of basic knowledge

  • Aspect of self-determination and topicality

  • Exemplary learning processes

  • Flexibel learning situation

  • Presentation and learning instead of teaching

  • Own scientific methods for schools: theme-related concept

The concept of Learnfield Nature-Culture-Society was introduced by Gerda Freise in the years 1985-1993. Gerda Freise is the adviser of the project. These innovative environmental education concept with an interdisciplinary and project-oriented base has been used from some of the TRIANET partners for teaching, presentation and learning by ecological fieldwork in the model regions (especially on Naxos and Mallorca).
