First we`d like to give
you some informations about our beautiful island in the North Sea.
There is a chain of Frisian
Islands. It starts with the West Frisian Islands in the Netherlands. Juist
is the second of the seven West Frisian Islands in Germany.
Juist is 17 km (about 11miles)
long and has an average breadth of 500 metres (about 450 yards).
On the island there is a
small fresh water lake of a length of about1,2 km; it is called "Hammersee",
and it is unique on the Frisian Islands.
The connection to the mainland
depends on the tide which means that the ferry between the mainland and
Juist normally goes only once a day.
The island is free of car
traffic; everything here is transported by horse-drawn vehicles, barrows
and bicycles. Only medical services and the fire brigade have motor-cars.
We islanders walk or go by bike.
Many tourists visit our
island. About 1600 islanders live here permanently, but in the holiday
period our island can have more than 5000 inhabitants. Most of the visitors
come here, to relax and to enjoy the long beach without breakwaters and
the singular landscape of muddy shallows with the large national park.
